Free Dubs: Return is my latest DJ mix, created while traveling between Denver and Hong Kong and consisting of exclusively free and downloadable music. Intended to showcase talented artists giving away their dubs, this features a selection of tracks that is much funkier than the first installment. Full of upbeat productions made with a dub aesthetic; heavy bass-lines and entrancing rhythms abound.

Special thanks go to the creators for sharing their work, to Narita Airport for not only having free wi-fi but also wall plugs, and to my ever-supportive wife for graciously encouraging me to take a two-week holiday with friends and family that also enabled me to construct this mix.

Intended to showcase talented artists giving away their dubs, this features a heavy-yet-upbeat selection of tracks. Exploring the wild world of modern dub, the influences here stretch far beyond the Jamaican dub tradition, including the darker side of bass, the electric violin, and South American hip-hop.

Major Lazer’s “Get Free” is a meandering yet poignant light electro-ish track, one that avoids the brash party-anthem mindset they usually focus on.  The vocals from Amber Coffman, of Dirty Projectors, soar beautifully atop the melodies with hardly a throbbing bassline in sight.  Rcrd Lbl was equally surprised, and the slow-motion 80s-throwback video is perhaps a bit odd, but odd is good compared to standard club fare, and this is quality interesting music even if it doesn’t knock your face off.  Download the original and a tropical electro/funk Bonde do Role remix in exchange for an email direct from Major Lazer Get Free.

Sticky K drops “Persian Algebra” - some free Middle-East Moombahton fire for free on Mad Decent’s Jeffree’s pet net label.  So far Jeffree’s seems to produce duds or bangers, and ignoring the unnecessary drawn-out outro (and what techno track doesn’t have one of those?) “Persian Algebra” is definitely the latter with an Arabian-esque main theme squelched over pounding drums and the thankfully-not-overdone vocal samples and air-raid sirens.

Just like that Santigold is back, with “Big Mouth” to prepare us for her sophomore album Master Of My Make-Believe coming later this spring.  Wacky video and a catchy tune.  Her US ‘comeback concert’ (if you need to call it that, which you don’t since lately she’s been working with the likes of The Beastie Boys, Major Lazer, and even Amadou & Mariam for their new single) apparently rivaled that of her free show here in Hong Kong last December.  You can signup to download this track for free at Santigold.com.
